CD Review: Robin Marks Wears It On Her Sleeve
“Now that musicians can break out of their locale and circle the globe in a mouse-click (okay, I’m using a trackball, but you know what I mean), sometimes we get inundated with artists whose art probably should remain local. Robin Marks, however, is a talent that really does deserve to orbit the planet a few times.
With her newly released disc, “My Foolish Heart”, she polishes some jazz gems into a well-placed album that showcases her laid-back vocal style over some classy and often blustery tracks.
Opening with the title track, Robin soars over a stripped-down flugel horn/double bass arrangement that almost hints at the blues. From there, the album opens up and finds its way through upbeat urban jazz (“Morning”) and complex vocal rhythms (“Footprints”, “Calling to You” and “Double Rainbow”) as it remains creative but cohesive all the way.
Robin’s voice is Sultry and sly, infusing these tracks with a wry wit and romance. You will want to add this CD of cool jazz to your collection.”
